The Birthplace of the World-Famous Martini
Every city has its stories. San Francisco has legends.
At Galleria Park Hotel, one of those legends is part of our own. Before this address became Galleria Park Hotel, it was home to the Occidental Hotel, where one of San Francisco’s most celebrated cocktail stories began.
As the story goes, in the early 1860s, an itinerant miner stopped at the Occidental Hotel and asked legendary bartender Jerry Thomas to create something special before continuing his journey to Martinez, California. Thomas crafted “The Martinez,” a gin-and-vermouth cocktail that would become part of San Francisco’s cocktail lore.
By the 1880s, the recipe had appeared in cocktail guides, including Jerry Thomas’s 1887 Bar-Tender’s Guide. Often described as a bridge between the Manhattan and the modern martini, it helped set the stage for one of the world’s most iconic drinks.
It is a piece of history that feels perfectly at home at Galleria Park — classic, stylish, a little unexpected, and deeply connected to San Francisco’s spirit.
